Overwhelmed Online Shops Unable to Keep Up With Demand

Some online retailers are closing down their gift-wrapping stations as they cope with a crush of holiday orders that threaten to grind fulfillment centers to a halt this season.

J.C. Penney Co. JCP +1.65% Inc. stopped offering gift-wrapping for online orders this year, and Onestop Internet Inc., which fulfills e-commerce orders for dozens of firms out of its warehouse in the Los Angeles area, said none of the 35 brands it handles are doing gift wrap this year.

“We’ve had a few brands offer gift boxes for a fee of $3 to $5 but this has tapered off in the last year or two,” said Onestop spokesman Daniel Brewster.

The specialized service, aimed at giving a more festive look to online gift deliveries that typically arrive in brown cardboard boxes, has proven a time-consuming luxury this year as companies report surging orders that have strained fulfillment and package-delivery networks.
